MP Makhashvili: Elene Khoshtaria is political extremists who deliberately committed crime

“Personally, for me, Elene Khoshtaria is not an important figure. She is one of the ordinary hooligans and political extremists who deliberately committed a crime,” said Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the European Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament.

According to Makhashvili, the court’s decision represents a “restoration of justice.”

“Everyone, including foreigners who make statements, should not call on the government, but instead call on individuals engaged in political extremism to refrain from such actions and to participate in constructive public or political life,” he said.

Responding to a question about whether international reactions to the case constitute external interference, Makhashvili said such actions go beyond acceptable standards.

“This is interference, and it is not the first time. There have been cases when not only statements were made, but ambassadors of foreign countries directly attended court hearings. This goes beyond any standard. Ultimately, this is an attempt to put pressure on the judiciary in order to influence the verdict or to avoid responsibility for specific actions,” he stated.

Makhashvili also noted that Khoshtaria has acknowledged her actions publicly and suggested that this should be taken into account when assessing the fairness and proportionality of the court’s decision.

On March 24, the Tbilisi City Court sentenced Droa leader Elene Khoshtaria to one year and six months in prison.
