MP Macharashvili: US-Georgia ties restarted because authorities and People’s Power chose to tell truth

“I can tell you without hesitation, had it not been for our correct positioning and the principled decision of the Georgian public, the state, the government, and People’s Power to tell the public the truth, we would not be seeing the beginning of this new chapter in relations with the United States,” declared MP Guram Macharashvili, leader of the People’s Power party.

“If they saw you lacked dignity and simply did everything you were told, you would end up surrendering your sovereignty, starting a war, and allowing LGBT propaganda to thrive in the country,” Macharashvili remarked when questioned by the media regarding the letter sent by US President Donald Trump to the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze.

He noted that Georgia stands ready for a gradual, step-by-step rebuilding of relations with the United States.

“The fact that the current Trump administration is reaching out, and that we, of course, are ready to restore our strategic relations, depends entirely on how well we defend our dignity and sovereignty,” Macharashvili stated.

“We make it clear to everyone that we demand our sovereignty. The issue with the previous Biden administration was that they failed to perceive us as a sovereign nation. In this instance, we are ready for our relations to progress, albeit gradually.

We are neither waving flags nor living in a fantasy world. We understand perfectly well that every nation, particularly a superpower, naturally acts in its own self-interest. We have our own interests too, and as soon as these interests constructively align, it yields the kind of progress we are witnessing today between America and Georgia.

The outlook of the Trump administration indicates that our policies and interests coincide in many cases.

Naturally, this process takes time. We saw that [Marco] Rubio himself stated that he inherited a difficult legacy from the Biden administration regarding relations with Georgia. All of this required time. That time will surely come, and as the public can see, it is happening step-by-step,” Macharashvili said.

For context, US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, thanking him for his congratulations on the 250th anniversary of American Independence. In the letter, President Trump noted: “By working together to support sovereignty, security, and long-term prosperity, we can achieve significant progress. I look forward to strengthening our cooperation as we advance together toward a more secure, prosperous, and peaceful future.”
