MP Levan Machavariani: If new members face obligations but get no say, this is not EU we signed up for
“If new member states are to be denied voting rights, then this is not the European Union we have been talking about, nor is it the EU renowned for its fair treatment of member states,” stated MP Levan Machavariani, First Deputy Chairman of the Georgian Dream faction.
He described Marta Kos’s comments as absurd and expressed confidence that the issue would not be placed on the agenda.
“If there is serious discussion about denying new member states voting rights, then this is not the European Union we were talking about, nor the EU known for its fair treatment of member states. In such a scenario, it appears that new members are being asked to take on obligations while being denied the right to participate in debates on any given issue. What kind of equality is that? It is direct oppression of new members. I hope this was simply an ill-considered statement by Marta Kos,” Levan Machavariani said.
Before an EU Foreign Council in Luxembourg, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos confirmed to journalists that the veto power of new EU members would be restricted.
