MP Kadagishvili: Constitutional Court hearing showed that respondents recognized neither court, presidency, parliament’s legitimacy, nor parliamentary commission’s existence
During the Constitutional Court hearing, we saw that representatives of the respondent parties recognized neither the court nor the institution of the president, the legitimacy of Parliament, or the existence of the parliamentary commission, Irakli Kadagishvili, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Regional Policy and Self-Government Committee, said.
According to Kadagishvili, opposition representatives in the courtroom were making statements that worked against their own interests.
“In the courtroom, they were somehow undermining themselves by arguing that constitutional institutions were illegitimate to them. They were creating an impression and giving testimony against themselves.
“Do you know what the main threat to the country is? The main threat is that the country should constantly serve someone else’s interests from abroad. Someone has an interest in this country and needs a government here that serves that interest. It is disastrous for anyone to have mechanisms that allow Georgia, at any time and under any circumstances, to act in the interests of others.
“It is in Georgia’s interests for its sovereignty, Constitution and democracy to function, rather than for the country to become a field for manipulation by domestic actors and their external patrons,” Kadagishvili said.
