MP Ionatamishvili: State Security Service growing stronger year by year, will enter new stage under new head

Tamaz Borashvili has served the country’s security for 20 years, and while taking up a leadership position entails greater responsibility, his experience balances that responsibility, Parliament’s Human Rights Committee Chair Rati Ionatamishvili said.

Ionatamishvili said he is confident that Borashvili will be a successful head of the State Security Service.

“The opposition should focus less on criticizing others and instead look at its own ranks. If they have the ability to criticize, they should criticize each other. They very much do not want our country’s security to be protected to a high standard, but those hopes will be disappointed. The country’s security service is becoming stronger year by year and, under the new leadership, will move to a new stage of development, because ensuring security is directly linked to protecting the country’s economic development and security,” Ionatamishvili said.

The Georgian Parliament has approved Tamaz Borashvili’s candidacy for head of the State Security Service. A total of 83 MPs voted in favor, with none voting against.

For context, Geka Geladze left the position of head of the State Security Service on September 14.
