MP Dekanoidze: Georgian people dubbed draft law on Transparency of Foreign Influence Russian
“When financial assets from Russia remain uncontrolled, and there’s an attempt to exert control over civil organizations striving for the benefit of Georgian citizens, it’s no surprise that the Georgian people have dubbed this legislation Russian, the opposition MP Khatia Dekanoidze said.
“I deem this legislation entirely Russian, drawing parallels to similar laws enacted in Russia. It’s concerning to witness statements from leaders of the Georgian Dream questioning technical assistance provided by our international partners, including the EU, the US, and other Western allies. Therefore, when the financial assets coming from Russia remain uncontrolled, there would be an attempt to exert control over civil organizations striving for the benefit of Georgian citizens. It’s no surprise that the Georgian people have dubbed this legislation Russian,” Dekanoidze said.
The draft Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence was initiated in the Parliament of Georgia. The Georgian Dream party stated that the draft law presented in parliament this year is identical to the one proposed last year, except for one change. Instead of using the term ‘foreign agent,’ the new version uses the phrase ‘an organization carrying out the interests of a foreign power’.
