MP Dekanoidze believes EU candidate status to be merit of Georgian people

“It is crucial to highlight stressed that the current government exerted every effort to prevent us from obtaining candidate status. These efforts included actions such as the adoption of the “Russian law”, the president’s impeachment, and others. Therefore, if we do achieve candidate status, it is solely on the merit of Georgian citizens, over 75% of whom support the country’s European integration,” stated opposition MP Khatia Dekanoidze during a plenary session.

Dekanoidze highlighted that geopolitical reality also plays a role in granting candidate status.

“Considering the dangerous reality and threats in the region, the European Commission has decided not to leave Georgia alone in the face of threats from Russia. In Georgia, citizens are being killed because the country is occupied, and ethnic Georgians are the target of the occupation regime,” added Dekanoidze.

Opposition MP stated that the 2024 parliamentary elections would be a test for Georgia’s democracy and a determinant for the next stage of the country’s accession to the European Union.
