Ministry of Economy: Record figures recorded in Georgia’s transport sector

Record figures have been recorded in Georgia’s transport sector for the first six months of 2026, according to information released by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.

According to the Ministry, alongside the overall increase in the total volume of cargo handled at maritime ports and terminals over the first six months of 2026, growth was recorded at every individual port and terminal, as well as across every individual cargo category.

“The total volume of cargo handled at maritime ports and terminals increased by 22 per cent to reach 9.7 million tonnes, the highest figure recorded for the first half of the year in the last decade. During the reporting period, the total number of containers handled at the country’s maritime ports amounted to 409,397 TEU (a 9% increase), which likewise represents the highest figure recorded for the first half of the year in the last decade.

It is worth noting that the cargo handled at the ports and terminals included types that were not being shipped during the same period last year. These include: steel and various types of pipes, gold and copper concentrates, as well as several types of liquid cargo. The volumes of other cargo also rose sharply.

The first half of 2026 proved particularly successful for Georgian Railway; the total volume of cargo transported by the company increased by ten per cent to reach 6.9 million tonnes, the highest figure recorded for the first half of the year in the last decade.

As for June 2026 specifically, Georgian Railway transported a total of 12,049 TEU that month, which is also the highest monthly figure recorded in the last decade.

Alongside the growth in total cargo volume, Georgian Railway recorded positive trends across all operational sectors: imports, exports, transit, and domestic haulage. In addition, the Railway has significantly expanded the range of goods it currently transports,” the Ministry of Economy’s statement notes.
