Minister of Environmental Protection: Early warning system not single device to install and get information

In his remarks about the early warning system at today’s briefing, Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, Otar Shamugia, said: “It is not a single device or sensor that will be installed and will provide information.”

“The early warning system is a whole complex of measures, which consists of monitoring devices, including a weather station, radar, and hydrometer, which logs information, upon which we distribute forecasts and data,” he said.

According to the Minister, the United Nations Development Program has been implementing the project in this regard with funds allocated from the Green Climate Fund, so saying ‘nothing has been done,’ ‘discredits’ their efforts.

“As part of the project, more than 150 meteorological and hydrological monitoring stations were purchased. Some of these have already been installed. This process continues.

We have also purchased two modern radars in Western and Eastern Georgia in recent years. Maps have been prepared that reflect the dangers of different natural disasters and all maps will be completed by the end of the year,” he added.
