Minister of Economy: We are working on rollout plan with operator to implement smart metering in Svaneti as quickly as possible

The Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, announced that a crucial initiative has been launched in Svaneti to resolve the ongoing challenges related to electricity consumption. According to the Minister, work is underway in partnership with the utility operator to swiftly install electricity meters across Svaneti, describing it as a crucial step forward for both the region itself and the entire country.

“The process is moving forward on two fronts,” the Minister noted. “On one hand, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is working on the ground and publishing updates practically every day regarding the uncovering of illegal crypto-mining operations. On the other hand, from a purely energy standpoint, we are collaborating very closely with the operator. Together, we are establishing a timeline for the coming period to ensure the immediate, rapid rollout of smart metering across Svaneti. This will be an incredibly important step forward, first and foremost for Svaneti, and more broadly, for the whole of Georgia,” Kvrivishvili said.

Mariam Kvrivishvili further emphasised that restoring fairness is crucial, as the current situation directly affects consumer tariffs.

“The Georgian Government has made a highly balanced decision. On one hand, we have committed to maintaining the existing tariff policy. On the other hand, we will ensure that consumption caps are properly regulated. This will allow us to distinguish the legitimate needs of local residents, hotels, guesthouses, and other business entrepreneurs from the blatantly illegal and unauthorised electricity consumption tied to crypto-mining,” the Economy Minister stated.
