MEP Pål Jonson, on Thursday, said today’s debate over jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili in the European Parliament “highlights our shared concern with the health situation of Mr. Saakashvili.”

Jonson went on to say that “this debate also highlights the importance of Georgia to pursue efforts to strengthen the rule of law.”

“It stresses the need to ensure the fulfilment of the Georgian obligation on the international law to respect, to provide and to fulfil human rights,” he stated.

The MEP pledged “we will continue to closely follow the situation, and we will remain engaged and available to provide EU support to Georgia if required.”

“This [debate] is particularly relevant to the current context of Georgia’s application for the membership to the European Union,” he added.
