MEP Hans Neuhoff: EP gets hot as Georgians do not elect EU-planned government in 2024 elections

“For months now, the parliament has been getting hot and bothered about the fact that in October 2024, the Georgians have not elected the government that the EU had planned. And for months, committees and bodies have been wondering about how to punish the Georgians for this,” MEP Hans Neuhoff from the ESN Group stated at the European Parliament’s plenary where Georgia’s issue was debated.

MEP Neuhoff believes the EPP report on Georgia presents “a catalogue of sins and comes up with all sorts of demands, which are against EU legislation.”

“The European parliament likes to see itself as a moral institution, as a judge who chooses between good and evil in politics. For months now, the parliament has been getting hot and bothered about the fact that in October 2024, the Georgians have not elected the government that the EU had planned. And for months, committees and bodies have been wondering about how to punish the Georgians for this.

The Georgian government then decided to postpone negotiations with the EU until 2028. The report of the EPP on Georgia should not be made the scapegoat for this. It presents a catalogue of sins and comes up with all sorts of demands, which are against EU legislation – such as personal sanctions, legal procedures or collective punishment. It doesn’t say anything about the Georgian government removing its country from the conflict between the two blocs, which is what we’d have liked to drive them into. This report ignores its own legislation,” MEP Neuhoff stated, adding that his ESN will vote against.
