MEP Branislav Ondruš: Accusation of Georgian government's being pro-Russian most absurd
“The most absurd of all accusations is that the Georgian government is pro-Russian,” said Branislav Ondruš, a Member of the European Parliament in the European Parliament during the debates on Georgia.
According to the MEP, today’s situation is the result of ignoring Georgian reality, as well as the unprecedented interference of various European politicians in Georgia’s affairs
“The most absurd of all accusations is that the Georgian government is pro-Russian. But how can a government which has not accepted the occupation of over 20 percent of its territory, which is demanding that the Russians withdraw and which is fighting to restore Georgia’s territory and integrity be pro-Russian?
Today’s situation is the result of ignoring Georgian reality, as well as the unprecedented interference of various European politicians in Georgia’s affairs, the shift in attitudes of the Georgian government over the last two years represents a defense mechanism in response to unfair pressure from Europe. Instead of tolerance and understanding of the complicated Georgian reality in relation to Russia. The Union has begun to dictate to the Georgians regardless of the impact on their economy and defense.
Georgia is actually doomed to seek balanced relations with Russia because the EU is unable to offer any security guarantees. The Russian army can be in Tbilisi in three days, and may I remind you that the EU has cooperated amicably with Russia for many years, notwithstanding the long-standing occupation of Georgian territory. I therefore call for a change in our approach and the resumption of the fair and partner dialogue with Georgia. Based on mutual respect,” he said.
