Marta Kos: Regarding Georgia, we can only do as much as member states wish to do

“The European Union can only go as far on policy towards Georgia as its member states are prepared to agree on,” European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos told the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) on Wednesday.

Responding to a question from Polish MEP Krzysztof Brejza (European People’s Party) about a potential suspension of Georgia’s broader visa-free regime, Marta Kos pointed to an upcoming high-level ministerial debate in Brussels.

During the committee session, Brejza raised concerns over current EU measures: “I have a specific question regarding Georgia. We have already suspended visa-free travel for holders of Georgian diplomatic and official passports; however, reports from Georgia suggest this has had little practical effect. Is the Commission considering a broader suspension of visa-free travel, and is there a realistic prospect of the Council agreeing on targeted sanctions?”

Commissioner Kos responded that EU foreign ministers would debate the matter shortly.

“Next week, we will have a dedicated discussion on Georgia at the EU Foreign Affairs Council. We can only do as much as member states wish to do,” Marta Kos stated.
