Marta Kos: Georgia’s European path remains open should Georgian authorities reverse course; We support Georgian People’s European aspirations
“In Georgia, the ruling party has continued to undermine the country’s EU path through persistent attacks on democratic principles, the rule of law, and fundamental rights,” said Marta Kos, European Commissioner for Enlargement, presenting the 2026 Enlargement Package in the European Parliament.
According to Marta Kos, responsibility to turn the page lies entirely with the Georgian authorities.
“In Georgia, the ruling party has continued to undermine the country’s EU path through persistent attacks on democratic principles, the rule of law, and fundamental rights. Civic space has been further restricted. With the ongoing attempt to ban major opposition parties poses a serious threat to the foundations of Georgia’s democracy.
With accession effectively at a standstill, the EU’s enlargement policy can, for the time being, no longer serve as the central framework for EU-Georgia relations. Responsibility to turn the page lies entirely with the Georgian authorities.
Let me, however, stress that Georgia’s European path remains open should the Georgian authorities reverse course. We support the European aspirations of the Georgian people,” she said.
