Majority MP Machavariani: Georgian-US relations to be discussed and reset under Trump administration
Levan Machavariani, a member of the Georgian parliamentary majority, expressed optimism about the future of Georgian-American relations following the upcoming administration of Donald Trump. He noted that in approximately a month and a half, the Trump administration will take office, providing an opportunity to reset the bilateral relations and address ongoing challenges in a more constructive environment.
Machavariani emphasized that the restoration of strong Georgian-American relations largely depends on the resolution of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“Matthew Miller first shared the statement on Twitter, then deleted it, only to repost it later, which was perplexing. Clearly, this suggests he was trying to stir up unrest and escalate the protest. This administration has about a month and a half left, so making such statements is irresponsible. They are attempting to leave a heavy legacy for Donald Trump, and a clear example of this was when, just a week ago, Ukraine was allowed to use American weapons on Russian territory, worsening the tragedy in a country already suffering. We have witnessed this very clearly.
Regarding strategic partnership, if I recall correctly, in 2009, after the war that Mikheil Saakashvili lost, a strategic partnership was signed on paper. Unfortunately, it didn’t lead to visa-free travel, direct flights, or free trade. A better example of a strategic partnership is our relationship with China. Once we signed that partnership, we immediately saw visa-free travel, direct flights, and free trade. That’s how we define a strategic partnership.
It’s reassuring, though, that in a month and a half, Miller and his administration will be gone. The ‘Global War Party’, along with certain politicians and EU bureaucrats, exert significant influence on them, but they will no longer be in power. In a month and a half, Donald Trump’s administration will take over, and we will have the opportunity to discuss the challenges in Georgian-American relations and reset them. Donald Trump intends to end the war in Ukraine immediately. I also want to remind the public that the restoration of our relations with the U.S. largely depends on when the war in Ukraine concludes,” the majority MP Machavariani declared.
