Lelo says Saakashvili's confinement should not hinder Ukraine-Georgia relations

“The Georgian government has to apply all measures for ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili’s confinement not to become an obstacle for Ukraine-Georgia relations,” said Davit Usupashvili, a member of the opposition Lelo party.

According to Davit Usupashvili, Georgia and Ukraine should hold intensive dialogue to normalize the relations, adding the Georgian Ambassador to Ukraine was not expelled from the country yet but his pullout would be inadmissible, leading to an escalation of tension.

“The Georgian Dream is in an incomprehensible field, serving as an adversary for the number one partner. For what? Because the Ukrainians say, hand over our citizen, who is in prison there,” he said.

Davit Usupashvili believes that presidents have to make the decision, and Mikheil Saakashvili, as a prisoner, should be treated in line with international standards.

On July 4, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said the Georgian government should stop the abuse of the Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili and asked the Georgian ambassador to return to Tbilisi to resolve the situation.

“In this regard, it was proposed to Ambassador of Georgia to Ukraine, Giorgi Zakarashvili, to return to Tbilisi for consultations to find ways to solve the situation,” the Ministry said.
