Opposition party Lelo leaders Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze were taken into custody today after Tbilisi City Court imposed eight-month prison sentences on both politicians.

Law enforcement officers arrived at the Lelo party headquarters, where the two leaders were present, and formally served them with indictments.

The arrests follow the court’s ruling related to their non-compliance with demands from Parliament’s temporary investigative commission.

In addition to the prison terms, the court has barred both Khazaradze and Japaridze from holding public office for two years.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the detained opposition leaders will be processed through a police facility before transfer to prison.
