The opposition Lelo party drafted a resolution on war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine. The parliament will register the document today.

The draft resolution condemns the actions committed by the Armed Forces of Russia on the sovereign territory of Ukraine, ‘which contain signs of war crimes and crimes against humanity, violation of international law and human rights.’

“Russian Armed Forces carried out military aggression in many parts of Ukraine, including Bucha and other cities, destroying houses, schools, and kindergartens, killing hundreds of civilians, including children, followed by the outflow of four million Ukrainians from the country with refugee status,” the document reads.

The draft resolution calls on the international community to spare no effort to investigate and prosecute war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine. It argues all states to use various international formats, platforms, and mechanisms to impose legal responsibility on Russian President Vladimir Putin, commanders of the Russian Armed Forces, and all relevant officials for the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and war crimes.

The draft instructs the Georgian authorities to work closely with Ukraine to share its experience in documenting and investigating crimes committed by Russia and support the suspension of Russia’s membership in the UN Human Rights Council.

The parliamentary majority members say that they will not support the opposition’s initiative. According to the ruling team, Georgia openly and clearly stated that Russia violated all principles of international law when it co-authored the lawsuit against Russia in Hague.
