Lawyer: Mzia Amaglobeli's condition stable amid hunger strike; she remains spirited despite health issues

“I visited Mzia Amaglobeli today. We can say her condition is stable. On the 25th day of the hunger strike, she naturally has some health issues, but she feels spirited,” stated Juba Katamadze, the lawyer of Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti media outlets.

According to the lawyer, Amaglobeli states that she is on hunger strike not only for herself but for all political prisoners.

“I visited Mzia Amaglobeli today. We can say her condition is stable. She’s been on hunger strike for 25 days; naturally, she’s weakened and has some health issues, but she feels spirited. She states that she continues to fight in whatever way she can. From what I can visibly assess, she doesn’t have any particular problems. She maintains that she’s hunger striking not only for herself but for all political prisoners. She also passed along one request – that everyone who is hunger striking in solidarity with her should stop. The only information she provided is that various cynical statements from the Georgian Dream about her hunger strike are actually giving her more strength.

We, of course, asked her to end the hunger strike, but we also have to respect her decision. From the very first days of the hunger strike, we requested the penitentiary institution to provide information in the form of medical documentation. Initially, this information wasn’t provided to us, later it was provided with delay, which we verified with other doctors. This documentation and conducted studies were not sufficient,” stated Mzia Amaglobeli’s lawyer.

As Katamadze noted, Mzia Amaglobeli is weakened due to the hunger strike, but she requests that her health condition not be in the foreground.

“We approached the Young Lawyers’ Association to conduct appropriate studies and monitoring as needed for a person on hunger strike. After this, certain studies were planned and conducted, but it turned out that not all types of necessary studies were possible in the penitentiary institution and its clinic. Therefore, yesterday it was already planned to transfer Mzia Amaglobeli to Vivamedi. Here, she underwent certain types of studies. I met with doctors and representatives of this clinic. As they told me, there were no particular problems in the analyses; they gave me documentation, which we will verify again with other physicians. Various types of studies should also be conducted today.

I don’t have specific information about how many kilos she has lost. She has lost some weight, a person has been on hunger strike for 25 days, only on water. She has lost weight, moves slower, and is weakened, but as I told you, she always requests that her health condition not be in the foreground and that nobody should talk about it.

Regarding when a group of medical professionals will visit Mzia Amaglobeli, we are working on assembling the group of medical professionals, it’s almost complete, there are some technical issues remaining, and you’ll know when they go in,” stated Juba Katamadze.
