Kobakhidze: Georgia is one of first nations globally to procure and roll out Givinostat for Duchenne patients

“An agreement has been signed with the pharmaceutical company Italfarmaco for the procurement of the medication Givinostat,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced during today’s cabinet meeting.

According to the Head of Government, Georgia is one of the first countries globally to procure this medicine and integrate it into its state-funded disease management programme.

“Due to its high cost, this medication is not purchased even by many nations whose per capita GDP exceeds Georgia’s by five to ten times. That is the reality today. Yet Georgia stands as a shining example of a state caring for its citizens, including in the healthcare sector. The efforts surrounding the acquisition of this specific drug directly reflect that principle, and the successful outcome of this process is proof of that dedication.

This medication is intended for patients aged six and above, up until the loss of independent mobility. We will continue our work. Active efforts are underway to procure a second medication, and we hope to secure a successful outcome shortly. I want to express my gratitude to the Minister of Healthcare for steering this process so actively and bringing it to a successful conclusion,” Irakli Kobakhidze stated.
