Kakha Kaladze on power outage: Accidents and faults happen everywhere; it is good that situation was handled promptly

“Accidents and faults happen all the time,” stated Mayor of Tbilisi Kakha Kaladze in response to a statement by GNERC (Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission) concerning emergency power cuts across Georgia on July 24 and 25.

According to Kaladze, incidents of this nature can occur anywhere in the world, and the key factor is a swift response.

“I recall from my time as Energy Minister that a similar incident occurred where power supply was cut across the whole of Georgia due to an issue on the 500-kV Imereti power transmission line. These types of incidents happen everywhere, including in European cities. It is unfortunate, but it is good that the situation was handled promptly,” Kakha Kaladze stated.

GNERC’s working group presented the preliminary results of its investigation into the causes of the July 24 blackout in Georgia. According to GNERC, the Georgian power grid became decoupled from the Azerbaijani network on 24 July, forcing the GSE to step in to safeguard the stability of the national energy system.
