Justice Ministry: All 2008 war cases resolved in Georgia's favour in international courts
The Georgian Ministry of Justice has emphasized that all historical legal cases related to the 2008 war have been resolved in favour of Georgia in international courts, specifically in Strasbourg and The Hague.
“Regarding the August 2008 war, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has confirmed the following:
Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region are integral parts of Georgia and are currently under Russian occupation.
The Russian Federation, as the occupying state, is responsible for widespread violations of the rights of the ethnically Georgian population.
In its ruling on the August 2008 war, the Strasbourg Court ordered Russia to pay up to 130 million euros in compensation to approximately 24,000 Georgian citizens affected by the conflict.
In late 2022, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) concluded the August War investigation, finding no international law violations or any misconduct by the Georgian side.
Also in 2022, the Hague Court issued arrest warrants for three so-called high-ranking officials from the Tskhinvali region for crimes committed against Georgians during the August War and identified the responsibility of a deceased Russian general.
On April 9, 2024, Georgia secured another significant victory against Russia in an ongoing occupation case. The Strasbourg Court has recognized that Russia continues its illegal ‘borderization’ activities on Georgian territory, leading to widespread violations of the rights of the Georgian population,” the Justice Ministry states.
Regarding enforcing these Strasbourg decisions, the Ministry of Justice of Georgia stated that the country continues to actively cooperate with the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to ensure the implementation of the rulings against Russia.
