Justice Minister: Saakashvili has no right to participate in Georgian politics

Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze on Monday remarked on the opposition-tabled amnesty bill, saying it requires a detailed analysis, “and first of all, the security issues of the state should be taken into account in many aspects.”

In his view, “the amnesty must not be tailored to individuals.”

As for Saakashvili’s return to the prison, Bregadze said the decision would be made per the doctors’ recommendations.

Asked about the ex-President’s desire to participate in political processes, the Minister said, “Saakashvili has no right to participate in Georgian politics.”

“Convicted Saakashvili is a Ukrainian citizen, not a Georgian citizen. He will therefore be unable to engage in Georgian politics. He’s not a Georgian politician. That is why I find it inexplicable, both legally and politically that this will contribute to depolarization,” Bregadze asserted.
