On June 16 in Budapest, Georgia’s Minister of Sport, Shalva Gogoladze, and the President of the International Judo Federation, Marius Vizer, signed a contract for Tbilisi to host the 2029 World Judo Championships.

Leadership from the Georgian Judo Federation also attended the event.

Tbilisi will host the World Championships for the first time in history. This decision was officially confirmed by the International Judo Federation (IJF) President during the opening ceremony of the Tbilisi Grand Slam.

In April 2026, Tbilisi hosted the European Judo Championships, which served as a preparatory stage for the 2029 World Championships.
