Eter Liparteliani (57 kg) brought the European Championships, currently underway in Tbilisi, to a magnificent conclusion, defeating Israel’s Timna Nelson Levy in the final with a breathtaking throw.

The Georgian judoka made a difficult start, missing a throw early in the contest and trailing 0:1 going into the closing seconds. But with just 15 seconds remaining, Liparteliani produced an ippon to overcome her opponent and add European gold to her World Championship title.

She is the first Georgian woman judoka to win the European Championship.

Eter Liparteliani dedicated her victory to the memory of Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II, saying, “It was in your name, Patriarch!”
