Italian climatologist visits Gelati Monastery

Italian climatologist Alessandro Massari has anew visited the Gelati Monastery Complex at the invitation of the Georgian Culture Ministry to observe the current conditions first-hand following the temporary roofing at the west end of the monument.

The Cultural Ministry will develop an action plan after Massari examines the drying out of the walls in this part.

Monastery roof restoration began in 2016 and ended in 2019, revealing roof tiling defects that caused rainwater to leak into the monument’s roofing, damaging medieval frescoes.

In response to the said issue, several UNESCO experts visited Georgia with the help of the Culture Ministry, which now claims no water leakage since 2020.

The Gelati Monastery in Georgia’s western city of Kutaisi has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1994.
