Irakli Kobakhidze - Through occupation regime Russia abducts and tortures peaceful citizens
Russia occupies 20% of the Georgian territory, illegally stations armed forces in the occupied territories and constantly violates human rights – Irakli Kobakhidze, Speaker of the Georgia’s Parliament made this statement when delivering the speech at the 138th IPU Assembly in Geneva.
Kobakhidze spoke about Archil Tatunashvili during his speech.
“Currently Russia occupies 20% of the Georgian territory and illegally stations armed forces in the occupied territories, maintains the occupational regimes in both Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions and through these occupation regimes commit numerous grave violations of human rights such as abductions and torture of peaceful citizens, most recently that of Mr. Archil Tatunashvili, who was murdered with torture in detention in the town of Tskhinvali, restricts the freedom of movement for local population and for the internally displaced persons from these regions, and deprives children to study in their native Georgian language “ – Irakli Kobakhidze said.
He says that Russian armed forces keep carrying out so-called Borderization Policy “installing wire fences which not only restricts the freedom of movement but also Illegally separates the villages and sometimes even families”, – he added.
According to Speaker this situation creates an obstacle to the process of IDPs return and generates a new wave of internally displaced persons.
