Investigation Service arrests suspect smuggling particularly large quantity of gold bullion across customs border

Officers from the Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia, in joint operational-search and investigative activities with the Customs Department of the Revenue Service and under the coordination of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia, have arrested one individual for violating rules concerning the movement of particularly large quantities of goods across the customs border.

According to the Investigation Service, an intelligence-led operation revealed that a Russian national smuggled 713.3 grams of gold bullion, valued at 143,817 GEL, across the Georgian border through the Kazbegi Customs Checkpoint by evading customs control.

The investigation is being conducted under Article 214, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which carries a penalty of five to seven years’ imprisonment.
