“Hungary will always support Georgians and will never allow the European Union to impose sanctions on Georgian leaders,” the Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said following a meeting with Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze in Budapest.

“It’s a huge honour for us that Mayor Kaladze has visited us here, in this ministry. It’s very rare that someone comes with two Champions League titles to this building. So, we have really enjoyed this meeting, and we have taken it as an honour. I’m really proud that we personally know each other for quite a long time. And to be honest, it happens very rarely that we follow local elections of other countries because this is a real domestic issue.

But this time, personally, we were really crossing fingers for Mr. Kaladze to win again the elections in Tbilisi again, and the huge margin with which he has won the elections shows very clearly to what extent the people of Tbilisi are satisfied with what he has been doing. So, I ask him if he has some time to give some lectures to the mayor here in Budapest, I’m pretty sure that he could give some good advices to him on how to govern a capital.

We are proud that we have a great relationship with Georgia, with the Georgian Dream party. We are proud that here we speak about a cooperation of two patriotic, sovereignist, pro-peace governments. And, I told Mayor Kaladze that we Hungarians will always support Georgians, and we’ll never let the European Union introduce sanctions against the leaders of Georgia.

We Hungarians know the feeling, how it feels to swim against the current. We know how it feels not to be fully in line with the liberal mainstream, but maybe this is one of the reasons why the Hungarian people do support us. And, since your government carries out a patriotic kind of policy, this is the reason why the people in Georgia support the government,” Szijjártó said.
