Human Rights Committee Chair assumes For Georgia party's initiative as incorrect
Chairman of the parliamentary Human Rights Committee, Mikheil Sarjveladze, believes that the initiative of the opposition For Georgia party on the direct presidential election is incorrect.
According to Sarjveladze, the Constitution should not “fit certain political processes.” He said the current rule on the president’s election stands in many European countries.
“The Constitution of Georgia defines a system of a ruling suit for the parliamentary republic. In this system, the model of electing the President, which the current Constitution defines, is reasonable. By the way, Giorgi Gakharia (For Georgia leader), who represented the Georgian Dream, had the same position at the time. It is not clear why he changed his stance. When we speak about the constitutional order, the Constitution should not be adjusted to some political process. I think this is an incorrect initiative and probably aims at emotional moods,” he said.
For Georgia party member Beka Liluashvili said the party initiates amending the rule for the election of a President in the Constitution. He said Georgian citizens should elect future Presidents through direct rule instead of election collegium.
