Holy Synod to convene on March 18; further details of Patriarch's funeral to follow

A session of the Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC) will be held on March 18, 2026, at 14:00, in connection with the repose of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi, and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Sokhumi-Abkhazia, Ilia II. Further details regarding the funeral of His Holiness and Beatitude will be announced upon its conclusion.

The Public Relations Service of the Georgian Patriarchate issued this statement, and the Georgian Orthodox Church has also confirmed that, following the close of the Synod session, His Holiness and Beatitude, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II, will be transferred from the Patriarchal Residence to the Patriarchal Holy Trinity Cathedral.

No memorial service is planned at the Patriarchate on March 18.

Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II died on March 17 at the age of 93.
