Health Minister: We should monitor Patriarch's condition in dynamics, taking into account his age, a lot depends on body

“Based on the summary, the effectiveness and prospects of the current treatment were assessed. It was stated that the treatment is proceeding exactly as it should,” said Georgian Health Minister Mikheil Sarjveladze.

According to the Minister, the Council decided to make decisions based on the current situation.

“The society’s interest is logical. Everyone is interested in the Patriarch’s health state and medication. The council did not expect that ready-made decisions would exist with final viewpoints. The current clinical situation, its positive and negative sides, what is promising and what is pessimistic, were analyzed. Based on this summary, the effectiveness and prospects of the current treatment were assessed. It was stated that the treatment is proceeding exactly as it should. There is no other alternative. I will refrain from any formulations. Everyone has expectations for more and for the better. This is most important, and we should do our best. Nothing matters more at this moment.

As for recommendations and viewpoints, we should monitor the processes in dynamics. Due to the Patriarch’s age, much depends on the body. This will allow us to hold another round of consultations after several houses based on new indicators. There are not one or two indicators but many. In some cases, there can be positive dynamics, in others, negative. This requires complex assessment and monitoring.

Dynamics means that setting plans for tomorrow or the day after tomorrow is meaningless. The decisions which are relevant at this moment should be made. I am fully involved as a citizen of this country. At the same time, it is my responsibility to ensure that the treatment process lacks nothing. This is our responsibility, and we will fulfil it,” he stated.

Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II, was admitted to the Caucasus Medical Centre last night following a sudden deterioration in his health state due to a massive gastrointestinal haemorrhage. The patient is on artificial ventilation and is currently placed in the critical medical department.
