Government responsible for ex-president Saakashvili's rights protection, US Ambassador says
The Georgian government is responsible for ensuring ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili’s health and right to a fair trial, US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan said.
“The United States is following Mr Saakashvili’s case very closely. We really commend the work of the Public Defender’s Office. They have done an exemplary job of monitoring the situation and ensuring that his rights were protected, visiting him twice last week.
Ultimately, it is the government’s responsibility to ensure that Mr Saakashvili’s physical and mental health is protected, that his medical needs are met, and that his rights are protected, including a fair trial. So, we will be looking to see that the obligation and the responsibility under the Constitution are protected,” she said.
