Representatives of the Georgian government and legislature paid tribute at the April 9 Memorial on Rustaveli Avenue. Among those present were Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Minister of Defense Irakli Chikovani, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maka Botchorishvili, State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality Tea Akhvlediani, Minister of Environment and Agriculture Davit Songulashvili, Minister of Internal Affairs Geka Geladze, and other cabinet members.
President Mikheil Kavelashvili, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, and members of the legislature also attended, laying flowers and honoring the memory of those who died in the April 9, 1989 tragedy.
Separately, protesters gathered near the memorial, periodically shouting slogans such as “slaves” and “Russians.” Earlier in the morning, a verbal and physical confrontation occurred, during which one citizen was reportedly assaulted.
