Gov't raises maternity leave pay to GEL 2000

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili led the Cabinet Meeting at the Government Administration on Monday.

Topics of discussion included a Draft Government Decree on the Amount of Maternity Allowance and Measures Related to Paid Maternity Leave and Childbirth Support, Paid Child Care, Paid Adoption Leave. In line with the referred Draft Government Decree, total amount of the allowance has been set at 2000 GEL instead of the previously administered 1000 GEL.

In addition, teachers at public schools will be entitled to a full remuneration while being on leave during pregnancy, child birth and child care, as well as when adopting a child, which will be paid on top of the above maternity leave allowance by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. Funds will be earmarked towards this end in the relevant line items of the State Budget of Georgia. The Government Decree will apply to female employees getting maternity leave during pregnancy, childbirth, child care and adoption from January 1, 2023 in line with the legislation of Georgia.

The Labor Code of Georgia, being an organic law of the country, used to envisage 1000 GEL for the maternity leave from 2014, which has been administered prior to the proposed legal amendments.
