German Ambassador welcomes Georgia as EU member but reminds of standards
“In November-December, heads of the EU 27 member states will decide on Georgia’s candidate status. I believe Georgia should come closer and become a member,” said Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia.
According to the German Ambassador, the European Union has standards that Georgia should meet.
“We want to say yes, but the European Union has standards. Therefore, I hope that we will arrive at this decision smoothly before December. At the beginning of November, the Commission will present its report. This will be a technical assessment, and then in the November-December period, the 27 heads of state will make their own decision regarding the vote.
We think that Georgia should come closer to us and become a member of the European Union. We welcome this, it is in our interest, but the European Union has standards that Georgia must meet. This is known to everyone, I am not saying anything new,” the Ambassador said.
