German Ambassador: We want Georgia to get candidate status next week
“We want Georgia to get the EU candidate status next week,” the German Ambassador Peter Fischer told the GPB First Channel.
“The issue of granting candidate status to Georgia is on the agenda of the European Council for December 14-15. We have to wait for the Council. There are some difficult decisions, there is one member state that is making it more difficult than it should be, but that is how the Union operates. I am still optimistic, it is not the first difficult issue the European Council has referred. We have good practice at raising our responsibilities and reaching compromises and consensus on difficult decisions. In my view, it is very important that the European Council shows at the end of next week that Europe in a complicated and risky geopolitical situation, that we are in, can reach decisions and act.
Enlargement is our response to this complicated situation in the world. We want Georgia to get the candidate status next week, and if it is not next week, then it will be soon after. But, I still hope that it will be next week,” the Ambassador said.
