German Ambassador: I don't want to speculate about what's happening after elections

“I don’t want to speculate about what’s happening after the election. We are now before the election and we’re launching an election compass so all of you can form your opinion and go vote. And we hope everything will be free and fair, and transparent, and well-informed,” said Peter Fischer, German Ambassador to Georgia.

Peter Fischer remarked on the question of President Salome Zourabichvili’s statement in an interview with Euronews saying: ” Europe should confirm that if pro-European parties win the elections, the EU will resume enlargement negotiations where it stopped.”

“I don’t want to speculate about what’s happening after the election. We are now before the election and we’re launching an election compass so all of you can form your opinion and go vote. And we hope everything will be free and fair, and transparent, and well-informed.

And if you will form a government, calmly and peacefully, and continue a good development for this beautiful country. I will say something in my remarks. In the liberal democracies of the European Union, we tried to avoid over-polarization, over- simplification. The issues that are before the citizens of Georgia, before all of you, are complicated, and it’s not just war and peace, right or wrong. In a democracy, we should debate and compete in detail about complicated issues.

And always keep in mind that we should try to build a consensus. We should try to achieve a majority, and then make policy that’s best for the people. Well, you know, that as the EU we have said publicly, and I can repeat that the law and transparency of foreign influence is not compatible with the EU law. Therefore, it is a hindrance for Georgia to join the European Union. With such a law, you cannot join.

The European unit is fundamentally opposed to the kind of laws that we make in the EU. And I’ve said this publicly before. To join the European Union. What does it mean? It means that you accept all of our laws. When all the EU laws are the law of the land in Georgia, then you are a member. When that is not the case, you are not a member. It’s very easy to understand. There’s going to be very many election observers, also from European institutions, and there’s a standard by which we can say whether election was free, fair and transparent. To have elections that are free, fair, and transparent is also a condition to join the European Union because we are a liberal democracy. A country that can’t have a free and fair election will not join the European Union,” he said.
