Georgia’s transport sector records decade-high figures across maritime, rail and aviation sectors, Deputy Economy Minister says

Georgia’s transport sector is posting unprecedented figures, with record-high indicators recorded over the first eight months of the year across maritime, rail and aviation, Deputy Economy and Sustainable Development Minister Tamar Ioseliani said on the “Business Partner” program.

According to Ioseliani, growth has been recorded across all types of freight transportation.

“Through the seaports, approximately 13.7 million tons of cargo were handled in total, representing a 24% increase. At the same time, we are also seeing growth in container traffic, with an increase of approximately 9%. Around 554,000 TEUs were handled, which is clearly an unprecedented figure for the first eight months of the year. Accordingly, we expect record figures in this area by the end of the year as well,” Ioseliani said.

According to the deputy minister, the railway sector has also recorded its highest figures in the past decade, handling approximately 9.7 million tons of freight — an increase of around 9% compared with the same period last year.

“It is also important to highlight the fact that transit traffic has increased by 14%. This clearly allows us to say that the role of the Middle Corridor is growing. In this regard, Georgia’s role is also very important, as a connecting hub between Asia and Europe,” Ioseliani said.

Ioseliani also said that despite challenges facing the global aviation sector, Georgia’s civil aviation sector has shown positive dynamics this year.

“It is important to emphasize the volume of cargo handled through airports. Approximately 29,000 tons were handled, representing a 30% increase compared with the same period last year. We are seeing growth in this area as well, and the highest figure in the past decade has been recorded here too.

“Accordingly, we can say that the trends are very encouraging. The state has a clear and consistent vision and plan for the development of the transport sector. Naturally, in this regard, we also have very close coordination and cooperation with our private-sector partners,” the deputy minister said.
