The Georgian parliamentary majority leader, Mamuka Mdinaradze, announced that the Georgian Dream will introduce a draft law that will be a verbatim copy of the current U.S. Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) legislation.

Noting that the new U.S. administration has acknowledged the American funding of unrest and revolutions in various countries, including Georgia, Mdinaradze emphasized that the Georgian parliament has been lax in implementing the country’s earlier, watered-down version of FARA.

“We have not yet fully implemented our light version of ‘FARA’, despite its entry into force,” he stated. “However, several dozen of the wealthiest and largest foreign-funded non-governmental organizations have failed to complete registration in the registry. Therefore, we will adopt a new – American law, a direct copy of its current version, and ensure its full implementation.”

In parallel with the FARA-inspired legislation, Mdinaradze revealed that the government would establish a fund to finance public organization initiatives, requiring amendments to the Grants law.

“Public organizations that wish to promote Georgian interests, rather than foreign influences in our country, will be able to receive grant funding from the Georgian government,” he assured.

The parliamentary leader further stated that the Georgian government will take a firm stance against foreign meddling in Georgia’s internal affairs.

“We promise society that the more pressure, coercion, blackmail, and attempts to infringe on Georgia’s independence, create unrest and chaos in our country, the more severe the response will be – continuing through legal and political measures to prevent all of this,” Mdinaradze emphasized.

“We are committed to ensuring that our country will never again be subjected to blackmail, our institutions will be strong, and no one will ever dare to interfere in Georgia’s internal affairs, violate its independence, or disrespect the decisions of the Georgian people,” the parliamentary majority leader concluded.

Mdinaradze further confirmed that the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence will be repealed after a new FARA-like law is adopted.

When asked if the Transparency Law would be repealed, he replied straightforwardly, “Yes, after its adoption.”
