Georgian PM: The historic political process must culminate with democratic, open, and transparent elections
“First of all, I would like to comment on the historic political process that is taking place in the country today. Of course, this process was quite complicated, dynamic, and emotional but as a result, we have a new electoral system that has already been approved by the Parliament,” Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia made this statement during today’s session of the government.
As the legislative amendments envisaged by the ESCE/ODIHR recommendations are underway, Georgian PM said he is “certain the Parliament will successfully conclude this process.” According to PM, “this is a historic process that provides the country with the opportunity to move on to a new stage of democratization and Euro-Atlantic integration.”
“This is a historic process that provides the country with the opportunity to move on to a new stage of democratization and Euro-Atlantic integration. This will bring more stability to our democratic development; however, we are all well aware that open, democratic, and competitive elections must be the ultimate goal and the ultimate result of this process. This, of course, is our responsibility and we will hold the elections at the highest level together. This process was quite emotional; the degree of polarization was also quite high but we – the civil society, all of us together – overcame these obstacles and we must understand that each and every one of us must play a positive role in this historic process, regardless of which political platform we represent. Ultimately, this historic political process must culminate with democratic, open, and transparent elections. This will not be the victory of any party or public group – this victory will belong to the country and, correspondingly, each and every one of us must aim for this goal, regardless of the political platform we may represent,” the head of the government noted.
