Georgian gov't applied and will receive EU membership on behalf of Georgian people, Speaker says
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili emphasized that the Georgian government’s application for EU membership reflects the aspirations of the Georgian people and will be granted based on the country’s constitution and international law.
He characterized the recent actions of the opposition as a sinking ship, with some attempting to escape and save themselves while others seek to obstruct the EU integration process.
“The Georgian government applied for EU membership on behalf of the Georgian people and will receive it on behalf of the Georgian people. This is what the country’s constitution and international law are based on. Those who try to reject such an approach mirror Russian policy, which separates the country from its state and government, favouring specific groups. This is the Russian policy, implemented towards Ukraine and, among others, Georgia, when it selects its desired groups, considers them as a country, and ignores the government. The opposition has the same approach,” Papuashvili said.
