Georgian FM takes part in GUAM Foreign Ministers’ meeting

A virtual meeting of the GUAM Ministers of Foreign Affairs convened on December 28, 2020.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia David Zalkaliani, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeihun Bairamov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova Aurelio Bodnar, and GUAM Secretary General Altai Efendiev participated in the meeting.

“Georgia will take over the one-year chairmanship of GUAM from Azerbaijan from January 1, 2021. Davit Zalkaliani briefed his colleagues on the priorities of the Georgian Presidency of GUAM during the online meeting. Strengthening interaction within the organization in terms of political, sectoral, and parliamentary cooperation and deepening people-to-people contacts would be superior. GUAM Ministers wished success to Davit Zalkaliani during the presidency of Georgia in the organization, as well as congratulated Georgian FM on the holding of the parliamentary elections in Georgia and the approval of the Government,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry reported.

During the online meeting, GUAM ministers reviewed the activities held within the organization during the coronavirus pandemic. The parties particularly noted the active and successful cooperation between the GUAM customs authorities, which is extremely important in the light of the difficulties caused by the pandemic.

“The meeting also focused on the political, sectoral, inter-parliamentary cooperation with partners. The cooperation of the GUAM + format with the main partner countries and future partnership with other countries, including establishing ties with the State of Israel, were discussed,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Decisions on organizational matters and an online meeting protocol were signed as the meeting concluded.
