Georgian FM meets Chairman of Lower House of Ireland

Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili met with the Chairman of the lower house of the Parliament of Ireland, Sean O Fearghail.

According to the Georgian MFA, the sides welcomed the growing dynamics in the relations between Georgia and Ireland and emphasized the importance of exchanging high-level visits aimed at further deepening cooperation.

The duo stressed active inter-parliamentary cooperation as well as the Irish legislature’s contribution to building support for Georgia. Ilia Darchiashvili expressed his appreciation for the resolutions the Irish Parliament had passed in support of Georgia and expressed the hope that this trend would continue.

“The sides put the main emphasis on the process of Georgia’s integration into the European Union. Special attention was focused on the progress made on political and sectoral rapprochement with the European Union. The Minister of Foreign Affairs spoke about Georgia’s expectations regarding the candidate status and expressed the hope that Ireland will continue to be an active supporter of Georgia. Sean O Fearghail emphasized that Dublin backs the EU enlargement policy. According to him, Ireland will continue to protect the interests of smaller countries across the EU.

At the meeting, special attention was paid to the regional security environment, which has worsened significantly due to Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine. Ilia Darchiashvili provided the Irish parliamentary delegation with detailed information about the current situation in the occupied territories of Georgia. The need for the partners’ consolidated position for maintaining the issue of Georgia atop the international agenda, and in this regard, the importance of Ireland’s irrevocable support was also highlighted at the meeting,” reads the press statement.
