Georgia to host Spain in crucial FIBA World Cup qualifier #1TVSPORT
The Georgian national basketball team will face Spain today, July 5, in its sixth and final first-round game of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup European Qualifiers. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Tbilisi, with the GPB First Channel broadcasting the match live.
The game concludes the opening group stage, with all points earned carrying over to the second round, making every victory crucial. Georgia has already secured qualification for the next stage, but faces a difficult challenge against Spain, which enters the game unbeaten after winning all five of its previous qualifiers.
Head coach Aleksandar Džikić has nearly his full squad available, including NBA center Goga Bitadze, Marcquise Reed and captain Tornike Shengelia. The only notable absentee is Sandro Mamukelashvili, who recently joined the Los Angeles Lakers and is unavailable due to transfer-related issues.
Thirty-two European national teams are competing for 12 places at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup. After the preliminary round, the top three teams from each group advance to the second phase, carrying over their results against the other qualified teams from their group. They then play only against the three qualifiers from another group, with the top three teams in each second-round group advancing to the World Cup.
Before today’s games, Group A standings are:
- Spain – 5 wins
- Ukraine – 3 wins
- Georgia – 2 wins
- Denmark – 0 wins
Spain, Ukraine and Georgia have already booked their places in the second round, where they will face the top three teams from Group B — Greece, Montenegro and Portugal.
