Georgian Ambassador to Germany hopes his new German counterpart also wishes to restore relations

“It was genuinely a very good conversation. Crucially, there is a clear desire on both sides to strengthen and repair relations between Germany and Georgia, to restore them to a standard worthy of our shared history,” stated Alexander Kartozia, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to Germany, following the presentation of his credentials to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Kartozia reaffirmed that joining the European family remains Georgia’s primary objective, noting that German support is pivotal to that path and expressing optimism for positive breakthroughs.

“Historically, Georgia has been Germany’s closest friend in the Caucasus and the wider East, just as Germany has been Georgia’s key partner in Europe,” Kartozia said on Imedi TV.

“We discussed this rich legacy during our meeting today, and there is a genuine desire to revive the deep ties we once enjoyed. Germany will appoint a new ambassador to Georgia this August. I hope he will be just as dedicated to rebuilding bilateral relations as I am on my end.

Genscher famously remarked that an ambassador acts as their country’s representative in the host nation, and the host nation’s advocate back home. If both sides abide by this principle, relations between our countries will genuinely flourish.

Naturally, Georgia’s aspiration remains full membership of the European family and the European Union; a commitment we reaffirmed during today’s talks. Germany’s backing in this regard is decisive, and I remain hopeful that we will see positive progress ahead,” Alexander Kartozia has added.

Alexander Kartozia was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Federal Republic of Germany in September 2025.
