Georgia marks Mother Language Day

Georgia marks Mother Language Day today.

On April 14, 1978, thousands of Georgians rallied against the Soviet government’s decision on constitutional changes depriving the Georgian language of its state language status, replacing it with Russian.

Following the protest, the Soviet government withdrew its decision and retained Georgian as the official state language in the country.

Georgia has been marking Mother Language Day on April 14 since 1990.
