Georgia hits historic decade-high records across maritime, rail, and aviation freight sectors

Georgia’s transport and logistics sector recorded decade-high performance figures during the first eight months of 2026, according to preliminary data released by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.

Historical records were shattered across maritime ports, rail freight operations, and civil aviation throughput between January and August.

Total cargo processed across Georgian seaports and maritime terminals reached 13.7 million tonnes, marking a 24% increase year-on-year. This represents a ten-year high for January–August throughput, driven by growth across all cargo categories. Over the same period, containerised cargo processing at seaports reached 554,174 TEU, marking a 9% year-on-year increase and setting a new decade high.

In the rail freight sector, total volume transported reached 9.7 million tonnes, representing an 11% expansion over the equivalent period in 2025. Direct transit shipments recorded a 14% increase, underscoring Georgia’s expanding role as a key connectivity hub along the Middle Corridor international trade route.

Air cargo throughput also experienced strong momentum, with national airports handling 29.3 thousand tonnes of freight—a 30% surge year-on-year and another decade record for the sector.

Aviation maintained positive momentum in passenger transport. Georgia’s international airports served 5.7 million passengers during the reporting period, up 1% year-on-year to register the highest eight-month passenger volume in ten years. Furthermore, monthly passenger numbers recorded in August alone set an all-time monthly high.
