Georgia extends the application deadline by two years for those seeking to regain their Georgian citizenship.
Corresponding changes are included in the law on citizenship, tabled by MPs Beka Odisharia, Mikheil Sarjveladze, Aluda Ghudushauri, and Givi Chichinadze.
The draft law clarifies that this move will be in force between December 31, 2022, and December 31, 2024 for formerly Georgian citizens, as well as those who did not get a judgement on citizenship restoration/preservation by August 15, 2018.
According to the MPs, 1,935 formerly Georgian citizens filed for citizenship restoration in 2018 and 2044 did so in 2019.
As for citizenship preservation, 3,120 citizens in 2018, and 7,234 citizens in 2019 benefited from the temporary right to maintain Georgian citizenship.
In 2020, 1,217 formerly-citizens of Georgia applied for citizenship restoration, and 3,186 more requested to keep Georgian citizenship.
